Communicative Ways and Language Use

Introduction

A lot of people are concerned as to improper usage of English language in modern society; nevertheless, modern civilization faces the problem of language abuse being perceived as the instrument serving the purpose of the national interests. It is necessary to underline the fact that we stick to various stylistic means and devices using one and the same language units, depending on the situation; modern development of the business sphere made people be more involved in formal style of communication. The chaotic combination of different styles and usage of inaccurate and very often ugly communicative units resulted in degradation of English language; the paper will dive into the depth of different ways of communication and their analysis in various situations allowing evaluating the principle mistakes done in communicative processes.

Communication analysis

Rapid development of international economics and politics appeared to be the principal cause for decline and expansion of English lexicon at the same time; it is necessary to stress that the communicative process is of great importance for people fulfilling the purpose of sharing the information, or even having the fun. The era of industrialization, technological development and intercultural cooperation impacted the emergence of new lexical units to be used in formal and informal styles. It is necessary to underline the idea that modern people do not take care of communication awareness, that is why we can observe the mixture of styles and confused communicative situations. (Orwell, 1946).

It is necessary to investigate various communicative situations making the troubles in sharing the information; nowadays, people, who have created a number of styles, never try to use them effectively; inaccurate phrases and expression of negative emotions during formal lecture presentation is considered to be the central marker of modern communicative level. It is necessary to state that to grab the attention of the listeners in a formal environment, one should accurately and clearly reflect scientific theory and findings to make the audience understand everything. Communicative failures are frequently observed due to the lack of speaker’s professionalism; according to George Orwell, 1946, modern English language is the reflection of bad habits spreading through imitation and being involved in cultural, political and economical spheres. Orwell disclosed the analysis of basic communicative mistakes connected with two principle reasons: lack of precision and staleness of imagination. The analysis of communicative ways gave an opportunity to evaluate the incompetence and vagueness of modern language filled with the mixture of inappropriate phrases, and lexical units.

Above all, we cannot play ducks and drakes with a native battery of idioms which prescribes egregious collocations of vocables as the Basic put up with for tolerate, or put at a loss for bewilder. (Orwell, ‘Harold Laski’).

It is necessary to stress that the language chosen for this or that situation is not properly selected; people are not concerned with appropriate lexical meaning of the units to be used.

Modern linguists are involved in the analysis of relationships between formal writing and instant communication in order to identify the principle mistakes destructing communicative effectiveness. It should be stressed that special attention is paid to computer language; thus, according to Baron, 1984, ‘CMC was a possible agent of language change, and subsequent research documented the development and use of short, fragmented sentences; emoticons, such as smileys; abbreviations, and initialisms…’ (Jacobs, 204). In most cases formal writing is differed through its careful selection of language units; nevertheless, there are some cases when letters or documents are constructed on the basis of spontaneous incoherent lexical units underlining lack of writer’s professionalism.

Communicative ways disclosure appeared to be the principal cause for the development of standard simple approaches to be used for effective communication in any situation. So, one of the central point in effective communicative process development is concentrated on the ability to speak through eyes. In case of formal communication, speech, or presentation, it is important to establish appropriate eye-to-eye contact with the audience, allowing creating a positive impression on the listeners. Sometimes, people stick to long and informative speeches expressed through sophisticated phrases and professionalisms; nevertheless, it is necessary to underline the idea, that effectiveness and good impression are connected with the emotionality and simplicity of the data which is available for understanding, even if the listener is unskilled in the particular sphere spoken about. Linguists underlined the importance of level of voice to be used. Speaking with the friends or family members does not require thorough selection of lexical units and clear level of the voice, because the people, listening to you, have already been adapted to your particular manner of speaking. Taking into account formal situations, it is necessary to outline the meaning of tempo and pronunciation; these factors may be helpful even in case of your improper language units’ selection. (Gam, 2009).

In accordance with Orwell, the way people speak in various situations may impact the formation of attitude and interpersonal cooperation in future; that is why it is of great importance to take into account elementary rules characterizing effective means of communication. For example, it is prohibited to use various metaphors or similes in conversation process; some people try to make their speech colorful and interesting through stylistic devices, though they indirectly make it too confused, misunderstanding and vagueness. One is to use simple phrases and words if possible as this step demonstrates your openness to other participants of the communication; linguists support the idea of active voice usage; its preference over the passive one can be explained through directness and simplicity reflected in the conversation. Orwell managed to underline the necessity to stick to English equivalent rather than scientific words, foreign phrases or jargon. All these tips are considered to be of great importance for the formation of positive attitude, regardless of the environment and the situation.

Instant speech is perceived as the basic mean of connecting the person to the community he lives in; to be socially successful nation, people are to concentrate on the appropriate and careful selection of lexical units sticking to the genres and communicative environment. (Jacobs, 207) Linguists offer to follow some of the important elements helping to change the attitude in the conversation without taking into account the position or status of the listeners, be they close people or business partners: 1) it is necessary to support healthy relationships in all the spheres we are involved in; 2) the concept of confidence; 3) communication methods are to be presented through positive impression demonstrating no elements of frustration; 4) the speaker is to be concentrated on establishing the rapport; 5) the communicative flow is to be focused on clearness rather than misunderstanding and stresses. (Britton, 2001).

Our speech is a sophisticated method of information sharing and emotions expression; nevertheless, it is also considered to be the way of demonstrating the attitude to the speaker and reflecting the level of personal education. Very often the usage of professionalisms and jargon is not the marker of skillfulness and mature characteristics, but it underlines the inability of the speaker to select appropriate equivalents in the spoken language for the purpose of making the speech simple and available for understanding. One of the most effective way to grab attention of the listeners is to show personal interest in them; such questions, as for example, ‘Did you have a nice weekend?’ – ‘Bad’ or ‘Yes’, cannot be considered as involving and effective. (Harper, 2008).

So, the process of communication is not that simple; the way people speak underlines their status and language knowledge, as well as attitude to the person one speaks with; in order to reach effective communication, it is important to take into account basic linguistic rules and standards.

Conclusion

Language is considered to be the basic instrument for expressing thoughts and emotions; modern people make improper use of literary English, mixing it with jargon and ugly phrases. Political chaos and economical instability influenced the decline of language power; people use more and more unnecessary dialects making their speech stupid and misunderstanding.

In accordance with modern linguists, society is to be concentrated on the development of effective communication skills, as their national language is the reflection of their state social, economical, political and cultural life; language is the face of the nation which is to be demonstrated on the appropriate level on the basis of all the values of its society.
