Enhanced Emotional Intelligence Quotient Developing

It was once said that emotions teach people to reason. Emotional intelligence is the ability to manage the emotions of others, groups, and one’s self. After taking an Emotional Quotient (EQ) test, my results showed I have an above-average EQ with room for growth. This means I am being emotionally sensitive to people around me and yet I am aware of the effect my emotions have on others. This results in me having concern for others and forgetting about my welfare. This paper will focus on developing an enhanced Emotional Quotient. It will also highlight how emotional intelligence not only helps an individual but also the people around him.

People have different ways of expressing their wants, emotions, and needs. It is therefore important to develop one’s emotional intelligence because people who develop their emotional intelligence tend to be more successful and productive at anything they do and in turn, they help other people around them to be successful and productive. The results emotional intelligence brings about are known to contain elements that reduce stress thus having a productive organization (Serrat, 2009). Emotional intelligence is divided into social and personal competence that helps in developing one’s emotional intelligence.

Social competence mainly involves helping people around an individual who has established their emotional intelligence. Social competence is divided into two major parts, which include skills and awareness. It is important to develop communication, conflict management, managing change, building bonds, leadership, cooperation, and persuasion skills. These skills help in building people around you. In awareness, service orientation, getting opportunities through different people, empathy, building peoples self-esteem and political awareness are key factors to developing ones emotional standards (Serrat, 2009).

Personal competence helps the individual who has developed his emotional intelligence. It is divided into three groups, which include self-regulation, self-awareness, and self-motivation. Self-regulation involves taking responsibility for one’s actions, self-control, innovativeness, adaptability, and self-control. Self-awareness is when one can be confident of one’s self, emotionally aware, and knowing your strengths and weakness. Self-motivation involves optimism, achievement drive, initiative, and commitment (Serrat, 2009).

For one to effectively develop their emotional intelligence, they have to know the ability their emotions carry. Understanding, perceiving, managing, and using emotions are the abilities involved. Understanding emotions are the ability to contain and understand particular information that we come across daily. This type of ability helps in being concerned about the next person who is closer to you and how you would affect their feelings. Perceiving emotions is knowing and being aware of your feelings that translate to having accurate information about the world that surrounds you. Managing emotions is when your emotions have information that is ignored which is better because it helps in avoiding making poor decisions. How you feel influences how you think (Caruso, 2005). Using emotions by knowing your mood at a particular moment enables one to get the best results at that moment. This ability makes one have a positive attitude towards life yielding more positive results. All these abilities help one to know and understand their level of emotional intelligence.

In conclusion, we are all different thus, some people are born with a high EQ but others have to learn their way to achieving a high EQ. This is possible because the older one gets, the higher their EQ gets but for this to develop the level of your emotional intelligence, you have to be willing to learn, practice, and embrace emotional intelligence.
