Further Assessment Opportunity in Nursing

Introduction

Nursing is one of the careers which focus on providing and helping the patients, as well as the clients as per ethical issues, is concerned. A nurse needs to understand ethical matters to carry out her work effectively to perfect her career. Nurses usually have to challenge themselves to acknowledge their skill; for example, a nurse will have to ask herself what she can do regarding reasonable care. This paper aims to identify ethical issues and principles in nursing career Ethics provides a basic layout to nurses of how patients should be better handled. This paper describes nursing case scenarios and veracity issues concerned with nursing conditions in analyzing ethical nursing codes.

Identifying ethical issue that is facing the nurse

The ethical issues are specifically facing the nurse. The nurse has, for instance, been confronted by patient-nurse relationship ethics. The moral problem, in this case, is whether it is fair for the nurse to reveal the information to the daughter about her mother’s health condition. She can even prepare hence provide support to the patient. But that can break the patient- relationship quickly and the confidentiality of the information. Therefore, the nurse can withhold the patient’s health care conditions to the daughter. As a result, creating insecurities on trusting issues which will specifically affect the patient’s family members.. Principled nurses should always tell the truth. Still, here the nurse is faced with ethical issues on revealing the truth. Protecting patients’ rights is one of the ethical issues coming out from the nurse’s scenario. This moral leads to several other open, including limiting patient access to the health care unit whenever she tries to disclose the information.

The decision even can help in deciding on their own the kind of care and medication their relative patient requires even without the help of any doctor. The nurse is expected to tell the truth on the patient’s condition to the daughter, her daughter but maintain the mother’s confidentiality.

Two ethical principles are most relevant to the identified moral issue

The truth of withheld is seen among family members whom they are very responsible for and concerned about the health conditions of other family members. They usually advocate for withholding the truth among themselves to make sure they don’t harm their beloved ones. A physician must maintain a mutual relationship with the family members as they work together to ensure the patient is taken care of. Confidentiality can be defined as any spoken or written information and any noticeable sign language that should be considered to deliver better access to the patient (Health and Disability Commissioner, 2020). Privacy terms vary with the condition and situation, while Veracity mainly occurs when confidentiality is achieved. In other words, Veracity wins when there is apparent adherence of speech, behavior, and actions resulting in better communication truthful groups.

Honesty, in most cases, binds the nurse and patient maintaining a good relationship between nurse and patient. It will be very shameful to nurses if they lose trust in patients because that may lead to the problematic worst situation for the patient. A patient has the right to access the truth about her diagnosis and an option to forgo the disclosure. It gives the physician the right to question the two most preferable choices for the patient. Mostly surveys which are showing cancer data, as well as several diseases, wish those patients should be informed about their prognoses and diagnoses. A physician should maintain high sensitivity through high tactics, which results in the professional technique ever.

In this case, the nurse cannot share any patient’s medical condition without consent. It also applies to the health care management team, which cannot access any patient’s information without authorization (New Zealand Nurses Organization, 2019). The modern treatment being applied in today’s hospitals has ensured confidentiality, but the physician must maintain discipline when discussing matters on a particular patient. Current healthcare providers have tried their best not to reveal sexually transmitted diseases and any gunshot wound to any patient. In this case, there is a conflict between Veracity and confidentiality because the nurse is in a dilemma where to disclose the information to the patient’s daughter or to keep it to protect her dignity, respect, and confidentiality.

Two rights from the Code of Health and Disability Services

Right to be treated with respect

A patient deserves much respect while being treated. Care in treatment entails maintaining the patient’s terms and privacy conditions. The right is more relevant to the scenario. For example, when it comes to the side of nurse revealing the mother’s truth to her daughter, it will be in a thoughtful way hard; hence she has to make sure that she respects the values and needs of The patient. That will cost her even protecting the patient’s religious and cultural beliefs she upholds. She must discuss the whole issue by making sure she doesn’t at any point harass the patient (O’Donohue, 2019). In addition, the nurse must seek advice from the patient. She feels that situation may be worse for her daughter on revealing everything; by doing that, she would behave and maintain the patient’s right of respect.

The nurse should advocate for the patient’s human rights protection through which she will have maintained the career ethic codes of profession. The importance of stressing on human rights concerned to patients is usually to take full responsibility for protecting the patient’s choices, which aid in strengthening the nurse-patient relationship. The nurse, therefore, should consider both parties in her decision-making about Marina’s health condition to the daughter. She would instead ensure she does not violate the right to respect.

Right to make an informed choice and give informed consent

Right to make informed choice hence giving informed consent, is usually when a patient has several options on which she can decide whether and make a conclusion on either of the test. Therefore, the nurse should convince the daughter by taking several tests from The patient. In one or way or the other, she will assure the patient confidentiality is maintained between them. The tests should be conducted in a disclosed area where only the patient and the doctor can access the rooms while others remain outside (Brach, 2020). There are many advantages to this right because the patient believes that every test will result in possible outcomes which assure the patient hope in her diagnosed condition.

It is expected in the nurse while practicing the right; she makes sure that she makes an intelligent decision on the report, which will be waited by reasonable people concerned about the patient’s condition. The information should include absolute shreds of evidence like x-rays and other trusted outcomes like blood tests. By doing that, the nurse will have the option to protect the patient’s rights because there is no written information on many tests in most cases. She will explain to the daughter using the simple possible means of communication to ensure she passes the information intelligently.

Informed consent is usually essential because it gives the patient freedom to decide about the treatment or diagnosis that is about to be conducted by the health care provider. The right to make informed consent should not be limited, and the health care provider is not supposed to proceed with treatment before obtaining informed consent or assent. This principle is made primarily to protect the dignity and autonomy of the patient. In most cases, it is a legal document that ensures any operation or ongoing procedures between the patient and record are guaranteed and protected from abuse.

The nurse took professional actions

During the afternoon shift, there was a conversation between the nurse and the patient’s daughter; she wanted to know her mother’s condition. The question arising from this scenario is whether the nurse is obliged to give or disclose the patient’s information to her daughter? Firstly, it is reasonable for the nurse to tell the daughter about her mother’s health condition. Although she must make sure that she must live because the patient does not want her condition revealed to the daughter in which she must honor and maintain.

The nurse will develop better moments with her patient by opening to her about her daughter’s inquiry about her health concerns. The only fundamental problem about the nurse is only to prove her profession by taking care of the patient about the whole issue as per is condition is concerned. The nurse should make sure she does background researches to get confidence while dealing with such situations because they will be all over as they are usually concerned with nursing. In addition, before making any opinion, the nurse should once again visit clinical guidelines that will be more beneficial for her to handle the situation intelligently.

Secondly, the nurse should seek the patient’s response on sharing the information with the daughter. For example, cutting on confidentiality may seriously harm the insurance coverage and relationships and even result in losing a job. These consequences are usually avoided through the patient’s consent to share the information with. Therefore, the nurse should reach out to the patient to keep the values and respect to the patient. The nurse even should introduce confidential policies targeting patients, which should be implanted in her working hospital. Through that, she will ensure she keeps the patients’ rights as they discussed in the paper, whereby integrity will be achieved.

To improve and maintain patient welfare, confidentiality among the nurse and patient is very important. For example, the nurse will have to trust the patient to better her profession. The nurse should uphold moral values to the patient; hence that will make sure those she first inquiries from the patient before attempting to narrate the whole issue to the daughter. Marian’s terms and privacy to the nurse will vary to achieve and come out with a reasonable outcome. It will be better as it fulfills veracity terms which will be maintained while paving the way for a better decision; if the nurse breaches such rules and principles, the daughter and the patient can file a legal claim against her for violating the duty of care or tortious actions. They can also base the legal claims on violating the right to privacy and confidentiality. In such cases, the court will exercise its discretion powers and award special and general damages. In simple terms, the nurse will be held liable for any tortious actions or violations of rights inflicted on the patient.

Conclusion

The assessment described in the paper shows how nursing ethical codes in client’s and patient’s care are usually similar in several ways. Through the common, spiritual, and humanistic approach to the nursing career analyses how patients and humans, in general, should be taken off. Some values should be appreciated while dealing with human understanding, including sympathy, commitment, responsibility, human dignity, cultural beliefs, honesty, justice, and professional competency, essential to any profession. Different societies happen to share similar artistic approaches on health care matters. Hence the ethical similarities in professional and moral values in nursing are shared worldwide, so a particular region should detect and focus on the benefiting ethics. Regardless of religious, social, economic, and even cultural conditions, the values should adhere to. Nursing ethical codes result in better scientific inventions, valid information, and new documents about nursing ethics.
