IOM Report on Nursing Practice

In the report, IOM shares four messages that are to be implemented in the nursing practice. One of the messages is that nurses should complete their education and training (Fitzpatrick, 2010). This practice is suitable for nurses as they will be equipped with updated knowledge of handling certain diseases. Another message issued is that nurses should achieve higher education and training in the improved education system that promotes nurses’ education and offers an opportunity for nurses to steer collaborative efforts (Fitzpatrick, 2010). This is crucial to the nursing practice as nurses can interact with other professionals while acquiring further education and training.

The IOM also shared that nurses should partner with health-related organizations and professions in redesigning health care within the US. In the nursing practice, partnering will ensure that nurses get support from other health organizations as they transition into a new clinical practice. The last message issued by IOM is that nurses should be increased in proportion to baccalaureate degrees by 2020 (Fitzpatrick, 2010). This will be important to the nursing practice as having many nurses who have completed the baccalaureate degree will ascertain the competency and improvement within the health care system.

Influence of IOM report on Nursing Practice

The report influences nursing education and leadership by offering nurses a platform for improvement. In the report, nursing education is promoted by encouraging the nurses to acquire further studies in institutions that will provide an environment where there is room for growth. As such, the IOM tries to prepare the nurses to offer quality health care and patient-center services. In leadership, the report encourages nurses to undertake and complete the baccalaureate degree (BSN). This will ensure that nurses will have many nurse leaders who will partner with other health organizations such as education accrediting bodies to create a workforce that will care for the people. Additionally, having nurses with a baccalaureate degree will create certain opportunities and benefits for them. Nurses who have achieved it will create a platform where nurses can be heard and their problems shared to provide the healthcare they require.

Importance of Improving Nurse Roles and Education

Improving the roles and educations for nurses creates benefits for the aging and diverse population. The aging population is continuously rising, and challenges such as a rise in chronic conditions come with it. Thus, improving the nurse’s education will ensure that the aging population receives the healthcare they require (Flaherty & Bartels, 2019). This is because having nurses who have acquired their baccalaureate degree improves the nurses’ knowledge, thus, expounding their competency level will assist them in finding ways of helping the most vulnerable within society.

Additionally, the aging and diverse populations have numerous conditions and needs that require attention. By expanding their roles, nurses will ensure the patient’s needs are addressed by offering services per their conditions. According to Flaherty & Bartels (2019), improving nurses’ roles allows them to provide the vital capacity required to monitor treatment outcomes and ensure adherence to primary treatment goals while helping. As such, enhanced nurse roles will provide diverse services, hence treating various conditions patients exhibit.

Lifelong Learning

Education does not end after graduation, attaining a license and finding a job. Rather, nurses start a lifelong learning journey, which goes on for the rest of their careers. This is because they must continue to gather information to be in touch with the changes in their practice. Professional development ensures that nurses are kept up to date with the latest evidence, techniques, and technology in the profession. There will always be a new medical advancement or research that reveals new or improved ways to treat patients as the sector is complex and practices are ever-evolving. Therefore, lifelong learning is relevant in ensuring quality care for patients.

Patient Care Management within an Evolving Health Care System

Due to the change in the health care system, nurses are required to keep up in order to deliver adequate health care services to their patients. Among the ways they can do that is by focusing on the patient’s health and not dwelling on their illness. Focusing on health ensures that the perspective goes further and considers the possible risks and plans on the necessary measures of preventing it (Salmond & Echevarria, 2017). Thus, nurses can implement this strategy to ensure that their patients are safe during treatment while in the hospital and after the treatment when they continue with their daily activities.

Nurses can effectively manage patient care in the evolving care system by practicing patient care and family center care. This is because patients know what is good for them, and telling them what to do and not to do cannot fix the problem (Salmond & Echevarria, 2017). Nurses ought to include the patients and their families in every decision-making that may affect the patient. The involvement of the patients will promote self-management, thus assisting the nurses in managing patient care since the patients will be assisting in the process.


IOM recognized the need in nursing practice as nurses have limiting factors that make them ineffective. Therefore, sharing information that health organizations can implement will aid nurses in improving their skills and putting the acquired knowledge into practice, hence ensuring patients’ well-being. Moreover, identifying the benefits of improving nurses’ roles towards the well-being of the aging population shows the necessity of helping nurses improve in their practice. Therefore, this puts the development of nursing practice in a state where it is necessary to invest in measures that will perfect the nurses, such as enforcing them to undergo higher education so that society, especially the most vulnerable, may get quality services.
