Mental Health Care: Barriers for Patients

Introduction

There are barriers for patients who are seeking mental health care and this are issues that need to be looked at. On the other hand, people should know that primary care providers play an important role in the delivery of mental health care. In this case, there should be new methods that will be used to designate mental healthcare to various patients. The biggest barrier for patients who are seeking mental healthcare has been the shortage of medical staff (Barbara, 2008, p. 23). As far as healthcare is concerned, there are a lot of people with mental problems but they can not access treatment because they lack knowledge. Limited knowledge is a barrier because there are people with serious mental problems yet they don’t know that they are supposed to be treated. In this case, there is need for a policy that will encourage people to concentrate on the need for mental health care amongst people.

Discussion

People are supposed to be given enough insurance coverage to take care of such health problems but this has been missing. In this case, there have been a lot of inadequacies as far as insurance coverage is concerned and this needs to be looked at. This is out of the fact that we have patients who can not afford the required medical fee. There are reports that patients who have mental problems have been exposed to stigma and this is something that needs to be avoided at all costs (Weare, 2000, p. 36). This means that there is no patient who will be ready to access mental healthcare if they are being stigmatized upon. All in all, these barriers are supposed to be eliminated through good and sustainable approaches. A trustworthy management structure is necessary for effective mental health care and this has been lacking on various occasions thereby complicating the situation. Best practices should be developed for long term sustainability because this is what the medical fraternity needs to enhance mental health care.

Primary health care providers play a crucial role in delivering mental health care and this should be appreciated. In this case, primary health care providers have been identified as the backbone of the system. This means that the system can not progress and operate effectively without these individuals and people (Barbara, 2008, p. 19). The main focus of primary health care providers should be on the patients’ health and wellness. As a matter of fact, they are supposed to be on the forefront for proper identification and treatment of mental problems. There are patients with severe mental problems and this is where primary health care providers come in. Primary health care providers are supposed to furnish care to patients who need it through proper access.

Conclusion

As far as mental health problems are concerned, screening is very important and this is a role that has been occasionally performed by primary health care providers. Primary health care providers ensure that patients get integrated care and this is something that can not be ignored by anyone. Mental problems are different because of the state of the patient and that is why we need good providers. Patients need to be guided on various things and this is where providers have occasionally come in to ensure that they are progressing well (Weare, 2000, p. 62). All in all, it should be known that primary health care providers are very important as far as treating mental problems are concerned. This implies and means that they should be respected and treated well for an effective mental health care delivery system.
