Professional Knowledge and Abilities

Introduction

The selected society for this paper is the Society for Human Resource Managers (SHRM). This paper describes the society; explains how the Society can contribute towards increasing the professional knowledge and abilities of its members; and also discusses how the acquired knowledge and abilities can affect the members’ career success.

Description of organization

The Society for Human Resource Managers was established in 1948 as the American Society for Personnel Administration (ASPA), with its headquarters in Ohio. The name changed to the Society for Human Resource Managers (SHRM) in 1989 (SHRM’s Mission and History, n. d).

The Society for Human Resource Managers is currently a global society with members in 140 countries and more than 350 employees. The society has more than 30 specialized departments which provide the most essential and comprehensive set of resources to ensure that the needs of members are met (SHRM’s Mission and History, n. d).

The Society for Human Resource Managers commands a lot of respect, and is committed to equipping Human Resource so as to enable it play an important role in developing and executing organizational strategy. (SHRM’s Mission and History, n. d).

The Society aims at securing world class recognition in providing solutions for the both current and future people management issues that are most pressing. (SHRM’s Mission and History, n. d).

The contribution of the society towards increasing professional knowledge and abilities

The Society for Human Resource Managers, through its specialized departments, contributes towards increasing professional knowledge and abilities by doing the following:-

  • “The society addresses people management challenges that influence the effectiveness and sustainability of organizations and communities, by building and sustaining partnerships with human resource professionals, media, governments, non-governmental organizations, businesses and academic institutions” (Alabama SHRM State Council, n. d).
  • “The society provides members with the opportunity to belong to a community for human resource professionals, media, governments, non-governmental organizations, businesses and academic institutions where they can share expertise and create innovative solutions on people management issues” (SHRM’s Mission and History, n. d).
  • “The society proactively provides members with thought leadership, education and research” (SHRM’s Mission and History, n. d).
  • “The society advocates for awareness by policy makers, law makers and regulators of key people concerns facing organizations and the human resource profession” (SHRM’s Mission and History, n. d).

Effect of acquired knowledge and abilities on career success

The knowledge and these abilities that members acquire from the society affects their career success in that they would carry out their duties in a more professional manner that is acceptable universally.

“Being part of a community for human resource professionals, media, governments, non-governmental organizations, businesses and academic institutions provides members with a forum where they can share expertise with other members and create innovative solutions on people management issues” (SHRM’s Mission and History, n. d).

The community enables members to benefit from the expertise and experiences of other members, thus enriching their knowledge base.

Conclusion

The Society for Human Resource Managers is a good organization which every Human Resource professional should join, since it contributes largely to career success, and it is recognized globally.
